Ghent is a vibrant city with lots of cool things to do! Ghent has some really nice places to shop, go out, a lot of wonderful restaurants and most of all Ghent has got some beautiful historical architecture to be spotted everywhere.
There are lots of valuable new things happening around Ghent and this is why I wanted to share with you five new cool hotspots to see when you are in Ghent.
The used book cafe is a really cool new concept in the Kammerstraat in Ghent. It’s a coffee bar/ cafe where the walls are filled with more then over 20.000 secondhand books. In the daytime you can relax at the used book cafe reading a book, drinking some coffee. In the evening the used book cafe turns in to a cafe where you can drink a nice cold beer. The purpose of this used book cafe is too exchange your old book with a new one. This you can do for only one euro. You can also trade a book for free, but this is only possible when you write a personal message in your old book. By this the owners of the Used Book Cafe wanted to connect the people who are living in Ghent with each other and make reading a book even more exciting.
The Backstaybar is a bar/ hostel, which is located in the former newsroom of the paper ‘Vooruit’. The Backstaybar is a really nice art-deco building, which the owners have reformed into a hostel/ bar. The bar is meant for travelers and locals. The owners of the Backstaybar found it important that the two get to meet. Every Thursdays there are free concerts giving at the Backstaybar, which brings the locals and travelers together. At the Backstaybar there also is a really cool space to write. This room is called the Blogroom. In this room travelers and locals get to write their own personal stories or read a little. With this the owners of the Backstaybar wanted to keep the history of the paper ‘Vooruit’ alive.
Head or Tails is a shop, bar and music school all combined in one. By this Head or Tails gives you the ultimate shopping experience. Head or Tails is filled with really cool urban street style clothing and in the front of the shop there is a bar where you can relax and drink some homemade lemonades, special soda’s, organic wines and coffee and this all with some really nice DJ music playing in the background. In the basement of the Head or Tails shop there is also a mixing studio where you can take a DJ course and practice your own DJ skills.
OHNE is a really nice new concept in the Steendam in Ghent. OHNE is a packaging free shop that really wants to make a difference when it comes to the purchasing behavior of customers. The purpose of this shop is to bring your own recyclable packaging, and fill it with the products you need. By this OHNE wants to take the pollution of the environment in consideration and really wants to make the customer aware of their disposable consuming behavior. OHNE mostly sells biological and local food.
Peaberry is a really nice little coffee shop in the Limburgstraat in Ghent. The peaberry stands for a special sort of coffee bean, which has great taste. The coffee bar has got a really nice interior designed by dc-dc architects. Peaberry sells homemade coffee from the famous roastery Caffènation and also sells Peaberry iced coffees, iced teas, homemade lemonades and some really nice sandwiches and cake.
Shortly said, Ghent is not only about the famous ‘Gentse feesten’. Ghent is an upcoming vibrant city who has a great deal of new things happening just around the corner, just like WATT a new and lively neighborhood which is located in the former Electron-site. A place were coffee, fashion, art, cocktails and design get to meet.
I would definitely recommend you guys to discover and explore this amazing city. I know you will enjoy is as much as I did!
